Swaying palm trees, old volcanic lava flow, abundant marine life, soaring canyons; Hawaii is a land of many contrasts which will leave the traveller captivated by its timeless and unique beauty. Here are some great things to see and do the next time you’re in Hawaii.

The Bishop Museum, Oahu

Located near downtown Honolulu, the three floors of the great Hawaiian Hall will take you on a journey exploring the legends, beliefs, history and the way land and nature are revered in daily life by the Hawaiian people. You can see portraits of the Hawaiian Monarchy and displays of precious feather standards. Built out of lava rock and lined with intricate koa wood carvings, many visitors overlook this museum of unique exhibits.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Located on the Big Island (the island of Hawaii), the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is truly unique. Join an informative tour around the park itself, and make the Kilauea Visitor Centre your first stop. Take a guided tour through the lava tubes, walk across old lava flow and see where lava has flowed into the sea. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take a flight for a more scenic view.

Pearl Harbor, Oahu

A trip to Pearl Harbor is always filled with emotion due to the amount of lives lost here. But, unique memorabilia and displays will are informative about this important time in US history, and the USS Arizona memorial offers time for reflection on the heartbreaking attacks that occurred on 7 December 1941. Board the massive USS Missouri, but remember to duck your head as you wander through the confines of the USS Bowfin Submarine!

Waimea Canyon, Kauai

Also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, this natural wonder measures 26 miles across. A helicopter flight will have you dipping between the canyons and gorges and viewing the waterfalls from above. Hike through the canyon or drive to the lookout, it’s amazing! If you’re looking for a great hike, follow the Na Pali coastline. But be careful! This hike is pretty advanced!

Aloha

The culture of the Hawaiian people and aloha can be found nowhere else on earth. Aloha and the enduring love of ohana, which means family, is ultra important to the local people and is represented by the culture on each island.

As you feel the trade winds caressing your skin and softly blowing through your hair, you will understand what it’s like to be in paradise where aloha and ohana mean more than anything else in this part of the world. The Hawaiians love music and it is a big part of family life.
