The Strangest Thing You’ve Ever Seen

by Kelly on April 15, 2011

Last week we found ourselves in a very bizarre Buddhist theme park/ temple called Wat Muang in the small city of Ang Thong, Thailand.

I can’t really explain it, so I’ll let the images do the talking. Apparently they are supposed to represent the conflict between the Thai and Burmese. They’re so bizarre!

Not exactly the Thailand you always see, right??

Yeesh.

Mommy?

Ouch.

And then, I’m speechless.

And then, at the end, sat this gorgeous, giant Buddha.

Crazy, right??

Not exactly kiddie friendly, is it?

Will Peach April 15, 2011 at 11:28 am

Amazing photos! There’s plenty of weird ones in Vietnam too. Abandoned as well, which makes them all the more eerie.

Jan Ross April 15, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Wow, that’s just…just…I give up. I’m speechless.

What a find. Bizarre to say the least. Are the people who created it for real?

Jillian April 15, 2011 at 1:37 pm

How did you find this little gem? I imagine walking around was a bit surreal?

wtf??? who is this theme park aimed towards? WEIRD.

The NVR Guys April 15, 2011 at 6:46 pm

I totally get it! 😉

Oh my! So much for the sweet Thais! If you’re still there I would highly recommend a book of Thai Fables called “Tales from the Land of Smiles.” I was shocked by a lot of the not so happy endings which my Thai friends said they read to their children. It really shows you a different side of Thai culture – much like the place you have described.

That’s awesome. Reminds me a lot of the Christian Theme park just outside of Buenos Aires.

Roy April 16, 2011 at 12:38 am

Wow, that’s really freaky…

Funny you should ask– we were taken to Ang Thong by a friend who was setting us up with a ride up north. While we were waiting for the ride, that friend asked another friend to take us, and he picked us up via motorbike and dropped us off here. Can you imagine the surprise???

Kelly April 16, 2011 at 12:40 am

I KNOW! Crazy, right??

Kelly April 16, 2011 at 12:40 am

Yeesh, this was scary enough with people there, can’t imagine it abandoned!

Kelly April 16, 2011 at 12:41 am

Haha. Not unless you’re a super creepy, blood-loving kiddie I suppose!

Kelly April 16, 2011 at 12:42 am

Apparently! It’s everywhere too, this is not a small park. These statues go on for rows and rows. Who funded this? The government? Craaazy.

Kelly April 16, 2011 at 12:43 am

I’d say awe-struck tourists like me, but all the descriptions of these statues are in Thai. And, this park isn’t exactly anywhere on the tourist trail (nor is Ang Thong) AND to make it even weirder, there are temples set up throughout it. It’s like, gorgeous temples, buddhas and BAM! Savage killing. So strange!

Kelly April 16, 2011 at 12:43 am

hahahah awesome!

Kelly April 16, 2011 at 12:44 am

Thanks Laurel I’ll check it out! The thais seem to love this sort of story.. and ghosts. They freakin’ loooove ghosts.

Michael Figueiredo April 16, 2011 at 1:45 am

“A picture is worth a thousand words” is right! Wow… I’m beyond words!

Raymond April 16, 2011 at 8:03 am

Those emaciated mannequins got what they deserved if you ask me… 🙂

adventureswithben April 18, 2011 at 1:02 am

Oh, this was very gruesome! I think this ranks as one of the most strangest things I’ve seen.

Michael Hodson April 18, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Love, love, love. Must go.

Christy @ Technosyncratic April 18, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Oh my word… some of those are quite ghastly! Not exactly your typical theme park…..

Dalene - Hecktic Travels April 18, 2011 at 10:52 pm

I just…umm….don’t quite know what to say.

Remind me not to do battle with any Thai or Burmese.

Shannon O'Donnell April 19, 2011 at 12:15 am

Those are wacky images! How have I never heard of this…crazyness…. Can’t say I exactly want to go there, but it would be intriguing to see 🙂

Laura April 21, 2011 at 6:04 am

what??? I would love to see this! 😉

Phillip April 23, 2012 at 2:23 am

This is actually a depiction of Buddhist hell. That was no battle, simply sinners being tortured. Buddhists who sin more than they do good go to hell, and each way of torture depends on the type of sin you have committed.
