Koh Kood island: Thailand’s Hidden Gem

by Kelly on April 10, 2011

We just wrapped up our whirlwind tour of Thailand’s eastern coastline.

Our first stop was to Ko Samet, which was a total letdown with a 200B entrance fee for a “park” that was covered in trash and was so, so overpriced.

After sleeping with one eye open in a truly disgusting guesthouse that had mold on the walls, dirty sheets, holes in the roofs and enough mosquitoes to keep you up all night (for 600B mind you), we were really hoping that not all of the Thai islands have been destroyed like this.

We headed to Trat, a small city near the water that we loved, and it was there we met the owner of a dive shop on a tiny island of Koh Kood (sometimes also spelled Ko Kut).

The words “deserted beaches” and “clear water” came up in the conversation, and the way he was talking about it, we knew we had to get there.

It was absolutely spectacular.

Koh Kood is quite a large island, but somehow it has managed to stay totally off the radar.

There are no ATMs or banks, no streetlights or pumping clubs, just pure, complete white-sand bliss–with water that was so clear you could see all the way to your feet.

And there were starfish! You know, just, hanging out in the water!

The only downside is that it’s pretty hard to get around if you don’t have a motorbike or know someone who does as there are no taxis aside from the free taxi that drops you off after the ferry ride over.

So, you kind of have to find a gorgeous beach and stay put (aww, shucks).

After a few days of roaming around Koh Kood, checking out the island’s waterfalls and gorgeous beaches, I’m convinced that we stumbled across one of Thailand’s hidden gems.

There was hardly anyone, anywhere, and the accommodation set us back only 250B per night.

Maybe it’s the 350B price tag that it takes to get you to Koh Kood that keeps it so deserted, or maybe it’s just that most people bypass it in favor of the more popular island of Koh Chang.

Either way, I’m not complaining.

Shh!! It’s our little secret.
