I’m SO EXCITED!

by Kelly on January 24, 2011

Hey folks!

I am beyond excited to announce that after several SEVERAL weeks of hard work by myself and the amazing team over at Hop & Jaunt that my new business is ready to launch!!

About 5 weeks ago I had a dream that has literally changed my life.

In it, I was looking at a guidebook written specifically for women, and then I realized that I wrote it … so, naturally like the little Leo I am, I woke up and sprung into action.

Go! Girl Guides is the product of that dream.

As a solo female traveler myself, I was always amazed at the lack of country-specific resources available to someone like me: a fun, adventure-loving traveler who also loves to volunteer as I work my way across the world.

So, I’ve started a company that does just that.

At Go! Girl Guides, we specialize in creating country-specific travel guidebooks for women, volunteers and solo adventurers.

Our books will be packed with all of the info you’d expect from a regular guidebook (the who, what, when, where) but all of our info will be geared specifically towards female travelers, providing information geared just for them: i.e., safe places to stay, hostels that have 24 hr. security and hostels that have female-only dorms as well as centers for spiritual retreat and rejuvenation, and info on amazing centers for shopping (one of my favorite parts!)

Our books will also have in them valuable information on free and low-cost volunteer programs.

There has been a lot of debate on the internet lately as to whether or not we should volunteer, and I firmly believe that we should: so long as any money we pay goes straight to the organization that we are helping.

Together, my friend and award-winning photographer Krissy Sauter and I will head to Thailand in March to do our first book.

We will cover the country top to bottom, reviewing hostels and staying with different volunteer organizations to be able to recommend safe, fun and meaningful ways to travel.

Our guidebooks are written exclusively by female travelers, for female travelers.

We believe that travel can be both stimulating and affordable.

We believe in having adventures that change lives.

We believe that every woman has the power within them to do extraordinary things.

And I hope you do too.

Join us! Along the way we will be asking for your input on everything from where we should eat lunch in Thailand, to what country we should cover next.

Go! Girl Guides to Thailand will be available in early Fall.

Follow us on Twitter @GoGirlGuides, email me here at travelbugjuice@gmail.com or at gogirlguides@gmail.com and stay tuned for more updates on this wild ride.

I promise I will not neglect Travel Bug Juice either. This site will be just as up-to-date as it is now, perhaps even more so.

WANT TO HELP?

We are currently in the process of recruiting female writers to write guidebooks. If you are interested in doing a guidebook on a specific country, please email me and we can talk about specifics.

Generally, we pay for your flight and all accommodation throughout the duration of your travels, and offer a very happy stipend as payment.

Join in the fun! Email me, tweet me, whatever!

Thanks peeps, stay tuned for more info!

Wow. How exciting. Good luck with it all and congratulations. A Turkey guide would probably go down well. We get a quite a lot of emails from solo female travellers asking about safety and where to stay etc.

This sounds like an amazing idea!!
Last year I travelled alone for 2 months in Brazil and did 2 volunteer programs while I was there and absolutely loved. If only these books had been published before I went!!

Are there any qualifications needed to get involved in these guidebooks? I would love to get involved if I can.

Adam January 25, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Awesome idea and congratulations. Are these going to be print versions or online versions? Just curious. I am excited to see how this works out for you. I think it’s an incredible idea, so GOOD LUCK!!

Kelly January 25, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Hey Adam, thanks for asking! Actually, they’ll be available in both print, and online. We’re also in the process of developing them for mobile apps too.

Super exciting, I have to keep pinching myself! Thanks for all of the love and support!!

Kelly January 25, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Hey Hayley!

There are no qualifications at the moment, other than you need to be enthusiastic, comfortable traveling and volunteering, and able to write! Would love to have you on board, email me at: email.kelly.lewis@gmail.com or at travelbugjuice@gmail.com and we can talk more!

Thanks!

Of course, we’d love to help out down the road, if and when you get round to a Turkey book.
