Accredited with being one of the most haunted cities in the UK, York is full of spooky goings on this Halloween. Spend a few days here and immerse yourself in the rich history and culture that this breathtaking northern city has to offer. You can find some uber cheap deals on York hotels to take advantage of, so your stay won’t break the bank.

This year sees an important anniversary for York – 800 years since the city was given the freedom of governing itself. Proud of their accomplishments, York will have plenty going on throughout 2012, especially during Halloween.

Head over to the York Dungeons and experience 2,000 years of bloodthirsty history. With professional actors, 11 shows and some haunting special effects, a visit to this macabre day out will be a gruesome hit with all the family. New for 2012 is the Execution: Traitors of York attraction, which will spook you with bloodcurdling tales of York’s Micklegate Bar. You can get family tickets for less than £50, although if you book online, you can save 40% on your tickets.

Between the 23rd and 31st October, York Maze will help you celebrate this frightening time of year, hosting an entire week of Halloween treats for all the family, including evening delights for teens and adults. Climb aboard a haunted hay-ride, carve a spooky pumpkin or join a eerie farmyard trail. The nights are where the gruesome fun really starts – York maze becomes your nightmare with Hallowscream, including The Carnevil, Barnaggedon and The Symetry – you can buy your tickets online for this advance ticket only event.

The Halloween Thriller night at York Racecourse on Saturday 27th October promises to be a fantastic evening of family fun, including “Ben”, a highly impressive tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Also included is a 3 course carvery, disco, face painting and a fancy dress competition for all the budding ghouls and witches. Tickets are £30 for adults and £20 for children.

Embark on a ghost hunt, offering a walking tour of some of the most haunted and paranormal places in York. Begin at the bottom of The Shambles at 7:30 and be led by a Victorian guide through the medieval streets of this incredibly spooky city. Alternatively, book yourself onto a dedicated search for the paranormal. Mysteria Paranormal Events are offering a Halloween special on 26th October running between 9pm and the early hours of the morning, including a séance in York’s most haunted house, number 35 Stonegate.

Whether you want fun for all the family this Halloween, or to be scared witless in middle of the night adventures, the medieval city of York has a myriad of events and attractions to choose from to ensure this Halloween is one to remember.
